| WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO! 5.10-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
[May. 21st, 2008|11:32 pm] |
I climbed my first 5.10 tonight, a 5.10-!!!!!!!!!
I am feeling soooo incredible, I think it's going to be tough to come down from this high and get to sleep!
It was a corner climb, with a left-traverse start. I love corner climbs, but traversing to the left is my nemesis. Somehow, after about 4 attempts, I made it more than 6 inches off the ground... then came the fun! Luckiiy, I had the advice of avra, Brad, and Random-Bouldering-Guy.
Yep, in a corner climb half the work is done by pushing outwards into the corner with your hands and feet, and smearing or shimmying your way up, holding onto nothing, but pressing into the wall. SO. FUN. There were a ton of crimpy holds, and some good holds, and some REALLY CRIMPY TOE HOLDS that broke my feet.
The worst part was doing the splits for most of the way up, stretching my hip-flexors past their max, and then pushing up all my body weight on them. Somehow, even with the pain, this was REALLY fun.
There were two or three holds I had to leap for... imagine leaping for a hold, that's not that easy to grip, when your hands and feet are not really holding onto much because you're staying in place by pressing yourself into a corner. Fun. A few attempts for one of them, but fun.
Yep. I feel awesome. Fear my awesome!!!!!!!
The fabulous Brad climbed it after me. He's a copycat. ;)
Linz = pumped. I can't wait for more on Friday night!!!!!!!! |

Ikea has already been checked. |

It feels REALLY good to be climbing again. I didn't realize how much I missed it. I'm glad Nick and I are in a "let's get in shape" kind of a pact where we're climbing over lunch hour. Sweet. Works into my schedule perfectly -- especially with the show madness right now!
My loft is officially mine as of tomorrow. Huzzah! (And fecking land transfer property tax. Evil evil evil.) |

[Jan. 15th, 2008|02:03 pm] |
Happy New Year? I'm happy to be back to my routines... kind of. My work schedule is quite wonky right now, but I'll survive.
I'm back on the WeightWatchers bandwagon, and working out is going REALLY well. I am absolutely hooked on the new Adaptive Movement Trainer (AMT) machine at the gym. It's my new best friend. Climbing is stalled until Ms avra's hand recovers. Wish her good thoughts, ok?
Singing is going REALLY well too - and so is my upcoming show. I am really starting to bond with my fellow cast-members, and the directors are finally starting to see my abilities. Goodgoodgood.
I wish I had a little more time (or any time) to actually socialize. But I knew this would happen. Hopefully things will settle a bit once my show's over and I can actually have friends over to my new place. (Oh yeah, it's closing at the end of the month, so it will be TRULYMINE! Mwahhaha.)
Ok, off to my own lesson, some teaching, and a rehearsal. Happy Tuesday! |

I get my keys today for the new place! It's my Occupancy Date... because it's a "new" building, we don't close until sometime in 2008, so I'm essentially renting until then. But, MY NEW PLACE!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!

Ok, my conscience caught up with me, and as a new-home-owner (and current planet-dweller), I've been making some small changes in terms of my environmental footprint.
I've been thinking about this a lot, and thought I'd share. Of course, I'd love any tips/advice you might have!
Things I've started doing:
- Turning off the lights EVERY time I leave the room. Do you know the energy used (according to Mythbusters) to turn on a light is the equivalent of leaving it on for 0.36 seconds. Seeing as I'm ALWAYS gone for longer than that, I'm always turning off the light.
- Cutting down on chemicals from toiletries. I've switched to Burt's Bees natural shampoo & conditioner, and aluminum-free deodorant (and surprisingly don't smell... but tell me if I do!) I figure, if I don't want it in our water system, I probably shouldn't put it all over my body. I haven't found a satisfactory facewash though...
- Using only what I need. This is a tough one, that's taking a lot of reprogramming. I'm learning a really big personal lesson here. But in terms of water, toilet paper, toiletries, energy, I'm trying really hard not to be wasteful. Turns out I use more than I need for just about EVERYTHING.
- Cutting down on chemicals in my food. Organic milk, yogurt, eggs, and fruit and veg when I can. My poor pocketbook. This might not be sustainable over the next few months. This is also really tough when I'm on a diet and avoiding sugar... chemical sugar-substitutes make me happy!
- No chemical cleaning! I read this great book called Organic Housekeeping that has great tips. (Essentially, get a spray bottle and use vinegar for everything.) I'm hoping that no cleaning chemicals in my living space will amount to a less-allergic-Linz. Time will tell... I don't want them in my waterways, OR in my house!
- No more plastic bags! I'm using just my purse, and a couple of reusables from the supermarket.
- RECYCLING in the most anal way possible. It's kind of fun! Does anyone have tips for composting in a building with no green-bin service, and no outside space??? (Not even a balcony!) I'll drop it off at my folks if I have to for the city to take, but would rather not.
If you want to do some fun blog-reading, I'm really enjoying the following green-conscious blogs: No Impact Man Green As a Thistle Living Plastic Free in 2007 Tree Hugger |

[Nov. 6th, 2007|09:18 am] |
The climbing gym had ALL NEW routes yesterday because of a big competition they had on the weekend! So fun!!!
One of the staff members (Nadia) was so sweet last night and gave me some INCREDIBLE tips that have completely transformed my climbing. It's like singing, you know? In the same way that you have to be ready to hear something before you can really hear it. I hear the same thing week after week from my teachers/coaches and one week it just makes sense in a completely new way. The same thing happens with my students; I tell them the exact same thing every week, and one day it just clicks!
Well, that's what happened with me last night; I had a big click! My legs are a lot stronger than my arms. This seems to be a very common sense (duh!) kind of idea, but it really works better to push yourself up the wall with your legs, than to climb with your arms. Poor avra, she's been telling me this for months, but it didn't click until last night. And man, does it make a difference. So of course, I had to put myself to the test, and climbed a tough 5.9. Now it's my new happy 5.9! Woo!
Nadia also suggested that I get some climbing books from the library. I, of course, am newly re-obsessed with the library. (Free books! What could be better?!) So last night I stayed up way too late researching climbing books, and I ordered a bunch from the library. They had most of the technique ones I wanted, but unfortunately they didn't have Climbing: Training for Peak Performance or Training for Climbing: The Definitive Guide. Both the training books look really hard core and talk about nutrition and fancy training ideas! Once I get through the library books I might try scout these second hand!
Ok. Off to sing about ponies with the Kinders. Yeah, it's the best job ever. |

| Revitalised! |
[Oct. 29th, 2007|11:26 pm] |
I had such a phenomenal climb tonight, and you know what? I really needed it. I am absolutely hooked on climbing and the adrenaline rush of a good climb.
Tonight, I flashed (climbed fast and clean) a 5.8, and conquered a tough & new 5.8, and made it up my happy 5.9. I haven't been able to climb this well for about 3 weeks, so I'm ecstatic to be back up at this level.
My secret? Traversing. It's where you climb a really low wall, without any ropes. Sounds dangerous, but you're actually going horizontally and not vertically, so you get to practice all sorts of moves, and you can just jump off (about a foot down) to the ground whenever you need/want. Tonight my body actually figured out some new moves, remembered some old/new moves, and was just working how it should. Traversing, I love you. Of course, the good stretching probably helped too. (Hi hip flexors, I love you!)
Yup. Everyone should climb. It's wonderful! Thanks to avra for putting up with my shenanigans! |

[Oct. 19th, 2007|06:15 pm] |
Just because I'm young doesn't mean I can't effect change.
What I believe is not idealism; what I believe is in the realm of possibility.
Music can change the world.
Why do we "grow up" and start believing that freedom, peace, and beauty are idealized and unattainable? |
